Project Zomboid Maps: The Best Map Mods for Build 42

Of five Project Zomboid maps current on Build 42, start with Constown: no required items. Plus Tikitown, RaccoonCityB42, Rabbit Hash, Petroville and their IDs.

All five of these maps are current in the sense that matters most: each one has been updated since Build 42 became the stable version on July 29, 2026. If you only want one to start a new run with, grab Constown (B42). It needs nothing else installed, it was updated most recently, and it's built to look like it belongs in vanilla Knox Country.

The other four are worth a look too, but each comes with a catch its own author spells out. Below you'll find what each map adds, where it sits, what it needs, and the IDs to copy if you're hosting.

Which of these maps are current on Build 42, and which to grab first

As of early October 2026, the stable version is 42.21, which landed on September 28. Three of the five maps were updated on or after that day, and two weren't:

  • RaccoonCityB42: September 28, 2026, with the change note "Adapt to 42.21"
  • Tikitown: September 29, 2026
  • Constown (B42): October 2, 2026
  • Rabbit Hash: September 3, 2026
  • Petroville: August 29 and 30, 2026

A map last touched before a patch isn't automatically in trouble, but if you're about to sink months into a save, a recent date is the best signal you've got. With that in mind, here's the order I'd pick them in:

  1. Constown (B42), the safe one: no required items and the freshest update.
  2. Tikitown, the biggest and most ambitious, but its author says it's unfinished.
  3. RaccoonCityB42, a themed puzzle city that also changes how a run plays.
  4. Rabbit Hash, tiny and nearly all vanilla tiles, but an early release on Build 42.
  5. Petroville, a straight port for people who loved it on Build 41.

Constown (B42): the easy first pick

Constown (B42) is a small town west of Rosewood, split down the middle by a four-lane highway. Author Konstantin_Ananas built every building from scratch to match the style of the vanilla towns, so it shouldn't stick out as modded when you drive into it.

It has four areas. The commercial strip along the highway has the "Summer tree" motel, two auto repair shops and a run of closed-down restaurants and shops. The other three are housing, a trailer park and farms. Two auto shops next to a highway is a nice setup if your plan is to get a car running early.

There are no required items, and since July 12, 2026, the town's name shows on the map and it appears on the spawn selection map. The author also says "Constown is fully compatible with the Grapeseed map."

The one thing to watch is the upload. The same author has a plain "Constown" as a separate Workshop item. You want the one with (B42) in the title.

Tikitown & Powerplant: the biggest, and still being rebuilt

What Tikitown adds: a commuter rail line, Tikitown University, the Power Plant add-on and Port Authority docks.

If Constown is a rest stop, Tikitown is a destination. Drazion and three co-creators have added over 250 new buildings since launch, and it sits between Riverside and West Point, near Fallas Lake.

The list of what's in there is long: a rebuilt downtown, a commuter rail line with a railyard and docklands, the Blackshields Sheriff's Office, an FBI field office, Tikitown University, Mansion Row, tunnels and underground garages, an industrial sector, a Port Authority with docks, and the Proxima Medical research facility.

Two add-ons ship inside the same Workshop item, and you enable them separately:

  • Tikitown Power Plant gives you repairable equipment and an optional system that brings the town's grid back online for a while.
  • Tikitown Scrap Works adds salvage workbenches, with recipes learned from five "Knox Salvage Digest" magazines.

There's one trap with the requirements. The description names four tile packs, but those are for the Build 41 version. On Build 42 you need one: Drazion's Tilepack, a 276 MB download of its own.

It's tagged WIP, and the author is upfront that the town "is getting rebuilt piece by piece and it's not done yet." The Power Plant user guide is "still being written" too. On the plus side, the September 29 update was the eighth that month, so it's being worked on hard. Expect things to shift under you during a long save.

RaccoonCityB42: a puzzle city that is more than a map

RaccoonCityB42, by 十叁, drops a 2x2-cell city west of Muldraugh and gives you things to solve in it. The Police Station has three badge puzzles that unlock a secret passage and a jigsaw puzzle that unlocks a hidden armory. There's also a garage that opens with a password, and the password book is hidden somewhere in the city.

Before you subscribe, know that it isn't only a map. It also adds:

  • backpacks and suspenders
  • two magazines that unlock fence construction
  • two shotguns and the "SamuraiEdge"
  • a Biohazard Pickup Truck
  • "Biochemical Vaccines" that cure the Knox Infection

That last one is the big deal. A bite being a death sentence is the heart of Project Zomboid for a lot of players, and a cure changes how tense a run feels. If you're setting up a server, talk to your friends about it first.

There are no required items. The author also notes that Build 42.12 changed the repair recipe format and that this mod has been fixed. So if you still see a "Right-Click Repair" error, it's coming from another outdated repair mod on your list.

As with Constown, there's a second upload: a plain "RaccoonCity" from the same author. Pick the one with B42 in the name.

Rabbit Hash, KY: tiny, vanilla tiles, early release

Rabbit Hash is the most subscribed of the five, at about 303,000, and the smallest download at 8 MB. Haragon and doist built a quiet river town named after the real Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, to fill what they call "dead space between Riverside & West Point."

You get the General Store, a big farm, docks, a Police Station, 4-wheeler trails, foraging zones and a lootable in-game map. It uses only vanilla tiles apart from the General Store's sign, so there's nothing extra to install.

Build 42 support only arrived on August 26, 2026, and the authors call it an "EARLY RELEASE." The issues they list:

  • zombie spawn density has changed
  • some archways inside houses render improperly
  • the Marine Petrol Station sign renders improperly under the roof
  • tree leaves render inside houses in some areas

They've been tuning the spawns: zombie spawns were cut "roughly in half" on September 2 and lowered slightly again on September 3. Their compatibility line is blunt: "No promises on compatibility as of Build 42." They add that the change in cell size "expanded the map's footprint slightly, and maps that previously occupied adjacent cells but otherwise played nicely prior to B42 may be incompatible."

Don't confuse it with "Rabbithash,KY Fix" by Newerest, which is a different author's item, last updated in 2022.

Petroville: a straight port for Build 41 fans

Petroville, made by Petrovick for the Sunday Drivers community, sits south-east of Muldraugh. It has an overgrown inner city, residential areas and apartments, an industry area, a military area and an Ammo Depot, plus one single-player spawn point.

The "LITE" in the title is the author being honest. It's a straight port because "the original Petroville map files were lost," which means "no bug fixes, building updates, map expansions, or other content changes." One basement/bunker was added, and that's the only new thing. The author also warns that the map "does not meet B42 detail standards."

The late August updates were its first since November 2024. If you have fond memories of looting that Ammo Depot on Build 41, it's the same place. If you've never played it, the other four are better starting points.

It's also the only map here that needs a stack of tile packs:

Tile pack Workshop ID Mod ID
Melos Tiles for Miles Tilepack 2879745353 melos_tiles_for_miles_pack
Simon MDs Tiles [B41/B42] 2852704777 simonMDsTiles
TryHonesty's Tiles B41 & B42 2844685624 TryhonestyTiles
Community Tile Pack 3628736763 UnofficialMappersCommunityTilePack

These packs are much bigger downloads than the map itself: Melos Tiles for Miles alone is 1.6 GB. If the Melos pack uses too much RAM, enable "Texture compression" in the game's settings.

Do these maps overlap?

Cell grid: Tikitown, Rabbit Hash, RaccoonCityB42, Constown and Petroville sit in separate blocks and share no Build 42 cell.

Tikitown and Rabbit Hash both say they're between Riverside and West Point, which sounds like a collision. It isn't. Tikitown's block, which its author posted in the pinned "Map Cells" thread on its Workshop page in September 2025, runs from cell 25,26 to 30,30, so it ends at column 30. Rabbit Hash runs from 35,28 to 37,29, so it starts at column 35. They share some rows, but there are four columns of cells between them.

The same goes for the rest. The five maps list no Build 42 cell in common, so by those lists none of them lands on another.

Your own list is the bigger question, especially with Rabbit Hash's warning about neighbors. For that, use Map Mod Manager (41 and 42), Workshop ID 3360392628, Mod ID mapmodmanager. Once it's enabled, a "Map Mod Manager" button appears under Quit on the main menu, and it shows your subscribed maps on a cell grid:

  • Red: maps that conflict with each other
  • Yellow: a map that conflicts with a vanilla map area
  • Purple: no conflicts

The game itself has also become friendlier to stacking maps. Version 42.20.0 fixed an issue where zones could be incorrectly removed when using multiple map mods.

Subscribing to the right upload and its required items

  1. Pick the Build 42 upload. For Constown and RaccoonCity that means the item with B42 in the title, not the plain-named one.
  2. Check "Required items" on the right of the Workshop page and subscribe to each one. Every tile pack is its own Workshop item.
  3. Enable everything in the game's built-in mod manager. It shows each mod's dependencies and incompatible mods, and it saves presets, so you can keep more than one list.

If you're hosting, each map's Workshop page ends with its Workshop ID, Mod ID and Map Folder. Those are the same three values in the code blocks above, along with the IDs for each tile pack.

Saves and game versions

Build 41 saves are not compatible with Build 42, so coming back from an old run means starting fresh. Saves from the Unstable 42.19 version don't carry into 42.20 either. Saves from 42.20.4 "should not be affected" by 42.21.

Even so, back up your save manually before any game update. Version 42.21 went to the Unstable branch first and then to Stable, which gave mod authors a few days to patch. RaccoonCityB42's "Adapt to 42.21" note on release day is a good example. A backup means you can wait for your maps to catch up without risking the run.

FAQ

Which upload do I subscribe to if a map has two versions?

The one marked for Build 42. That's "Constown (B42)" rather than "Constown," and "RaccoonCityB42" rather than "RaccoonCity." Tikitown, Rabbit Hash and Petroville each have a single Workshop item for the map.

Do Tikitown and Rabbit Hash clash?

No. Tikitown covers cells 25,26 to 30,30 and Rabbit Hash covers 35,28 to 37,29, so they don't share a cell. Rabbit Hash's authors do warn that maps that "previously occupied adjacent cells" and worked before Build 42 "may be incompatible," so run Map Mod Manager if you've got other maps in that area.

What does "LITE" mean on Petroville?

It's the Build 41 map ported straight across, because the original map files were lost. There are no bug fixes, building updates or expansions, only one added basement/bunker.

Do I need tile packs for all five?

No. Constown (B42), RaccoonCityB42 and Rabbit Hash need nothing extra. Tikitown needs Drazion's Tilepack on Build 42, and Petroville needs four tile packs.

Can I still play these on Build 41?

Yes. In Steam, right-click the game, open "Properties," go to "Game Versions & Betas" and select legacy41. Then use the Build 41 uploads: the plain "Constown" and "RaccoonCity" items, and the Build 41 tile packs listed in Tikitown's description.
